3.1 flashcards
Which element is all life made up of?
Carbon
What is a functional group?
Parts of organic molecules that are involved in chemical reactions
What is one effect of a functional group?
It can make hydrocarbons, increase solubility in water
What are the properties of Hydroxyl functional group wise?
-OH, Polar, an alcohol
What are the properties of Carbonyl?
-COH, Polar, aldenhyde, ketons
What are the properties of Carboxyl?
-COOH, Acids, negative charge
What is the broad term for the smallest unit that molecules are made of?
Monomers
What is the broad term for which when multiple monomers form together?
Polymers
What happens during condensation?
It joins two molecules together and involves the elimination of a water molecule
What are monomers?
A singular unit, small molecule, that can be chained together
What is a polymer?
A polymer is a bunch of monomers that are linked together like a chain, also known as macromolecules, repeated monomers, formed in process called polymerisation
What is something that can affect the polymers?
The type of chain that is formed and how long it is, like a real chain
List the properties of carbohydrates:
Type of molecule made up of various monomers called monosaccharides that form polymers called polysaccharides
Define the properties of Nucleotides
Type of molecule that make up the strands of DNA, mononucleotides form to make polynucleotides
List the properties of Proteins
Made from amino acids and peptides, the amino acids are the monomers and the peptides are it’s polymers
