5.4 sg Flashcards
What are the three parts to RNA?
tRNA, rRNA, and mRNA
What does tRNA do?
Transfers amino acids that have anti codons that pair with mRNA codons to put amino acids on the correct order
What does mRNA do?
Contains message/code for amino acid sequence
What does rRNA do?
Facilitates the matching of mRNA and tRNA
Where are the anticodons?
End of the tRNA molecule, mark the end of the the polypeptide RNA strand
Define translation
Decoding mRNA to make proteins
Where does translation happen
In the ribosomes
What are the 3 sites in the ribosomes?
A site, P site, and E site
What does the A site do in the ribosomes
Matches correct incoming tRNA to next codon in mRNA, aminoacyl - tRNA site
What does the P site do in the ribosomes
(Peptidyl - tRNA site) Hold rRNA carrying growing polypeptide chain
What does the E site do in the ribosomes
Its the exit lol
Define Mutations
Permanent change in the base sequence of DNA
What does the Point mutation do?
It substitutes a single base
What is a silent mutation?
It is a mutation in which there is no change in the amino acids
What is nonsense?
It stops production prematurely
