6.3 Flashcards
Passive Diffusion
Non-Polar molecules passing across the membrane with no assistance from high concentration to low.
Facilitated Diffusion
Polar Molecules passing across the membrane with assistance from proteins from high concentration to low.
Active Transport
Ions pass across the membrane using a protein and energy from low concentration to high.
Osmosis
Facilitated DIffusion, specifically relating to water.
Hypertonic
Side with higher concentration of solute
Hypotonic
Side with lower concentration of solute
Isotonic
Sides with equal amounts of solute.
Endocytosis
large amounts of molecules go into the cell using vesicles
Exocytosis
Large amounts of molecules exit the cell using vesicles.
What is important about surface area to volume ratio?
Lots of surface area is needed to get things into the cell but the volume inside needs to be small so that there isn’t a large travel time for things inside it.
