4.1 Flashcards
Enzyme
Catalysts that reduce the energy required for chemical reactions.
Substrate
Reactant that the enzyme assists
Activation Energy
Energy required to undergo a chemical reaction
Active Site
Site on the enzyme a substrate is inserted into
Describe the relationship between reaction rate and enzyme concentration.
As enzyme concentration rises so does the reaction rate until a certain point where it levels out.
Describe the relationship between reaction rate and substrate concentration.
As substrate concentration rises so does the reaction rate until a certain point where it levels out.
Describe the relationship between reaction rate and pH.
As pH rises so does the reaction rate until it reaches the optimal pH then it begins to decline to 0.
Describe the relationship between reaction rate and temperature.
As temperature rises so does the reaction rate until it reaches the optimal temperature then it starts to decline to 0.
What happens if enzymes heat up?
They will have a higher reaction rate until they get too hot and denature.
What happens if enzymes get too basic?
They will denature.
What are the differences between activators and inhibitors?
Activators turn the enzyme “ON” while inhibitor turn them “OFF”
What are some comparisons between activators and inhibitors?
Both change the shape of the enzyme to turn it on or off,
