1.5 Flashcards
What is the dependent variable?
The variable that changes in response to the independent variable.
What is the independent variable?
The variable that the researcher changes.
What is a control group?
A group that is not subjected to the experiment, so that it can be compared to the experimental group to check for change.
What is an experimental group?
A group that is experimented on and exposed to the independent variable.
What axis does the independent variable go on?
The x-axis.
What axis does the dependent variable go on?
The y-axis.
What is the difference between the experimental group and the dependent variable?
The experimental group is what is being exposed to the independent variable, the dependent variable is what about that group is changing in response to the independent variable.
If you were recording how sunlight affects plant growth, what axis would each go on?
x-axis: sunlight
y-axis: plant growth
How does heat affect the growth of yeast in a controlled environment? What are the independent and dependent variables? What would the control be? What would the experimental group be?
Ind. - Heat
Dep. - Yeast Growth
Con. - Regular Yeast Growth
Exp. - The Yeast
What is an example of an experimental group?
A group of patients taking a test drug.
What is an example of a control group?
A group of patients who do not take the test drug (or any drug).
What is an example of an independent variable?
A test drug for sick patients.
What is an example of a dependent variable?
The change in a patient’s condition.
What is the difference between the independent and dependent variables?
The independent is being changed by the researcher while the dependent is being changed by the independent.
