2.5 Flashcards
Cohesion
H bonding between H2O molecules.
Adhesion
Attraction between different molecules.
Solvent
Something that dissolves a solute making a solution.
Specific Heat
The heat it takes for a material to heat up by 1 degree celcius.
Heat of Vaporization
Energy it takes for 1g to evaporate
What are the 5 Properties of Water?
- Cohesion and Adhesion
- Solvent of Life
- Special Properties of Ice
- High Specific Heat
- HIgh Heat of Vaporization
Why is Ice special?
It has structure due to the hydrogen between molecules. That structures leaves empty space which makes it less dense that water.
Why can water do cohesion?
Hydrogen bonds
Why does water have a high specific heat?
Polar bonds are strong and hard to break apart with heat.
Why does water have high heat of vaporization?
Polar bonds are strong and hard to break apart with heat.
Why can water do adhesion?
Hydrogen bonds with other molecules
Why is water a good solvent?
Waters polarity makes it a good solvent.
How is water doing cohesion and adhesion important to life?
It creates surface tension and capillary action which is needed for plants.
How is water being a solvent important to life?
It is able to dissolve more substances than any other liquid.
How are ice’s special properties important to life?
Ice being able to float allows it to insulate lakes during the winter, and it allows for seasonal turnover.
