2.2 Flashcards
What charges attract?
+ and -
What charges repel?
- and - OR + and +
What is the relationship between Coulombic Attraction and Charge?
It is direct, so the more charge, the more attraction. AND, the less charge the less attraction.
What is the relationship between Coulombic Attraction and Distance?
It is inverse, so the more distance, the less charge. AND, the less distance, the more charge.
Which atom has a higher electronegativity, Na or Mg?
Mg. This is because it has more protons. (Further Right)
Which atom has a higher electronegativity? K or Rb?
K. This is because its valence electrons are in a closer energy level. (Further Up)
As the graph goes right, what happens to the electronegativity? Why?
The electronegativity increases because the amount of protons is increasing.
As the graph goes left, what happens to the electronegativity? Why?
The electronegativity decreases because the amount of protons is decreasing.
As the graph goes down, what happens to the electronegativity? Why?
The electronegativity decreases because the valence electrons are in a further energy level.
As the graph goes up, what happens to the electronegativity? Why?
The electronegativity increases because the valence electrons are in a nearer energy level.
Which atom has a better attraction with the valence electrons, Ne or Rn? Why?
Ne. It’s valence electrons are in a closer energy level.
