Q
I. Introduction
A
- One of the most important jobs engineers have is ensuring the apparatus is safe and ready to respond to emergencies
- The three types of inspections we perform are meant to identify any problems
- We should be actively looking for and anticipating that we will find something wrong
- Going through the motions will only ensure we don’t find potential problems
3
Q
II. I find something wrong during truck check
A
- Determine what level of problem it is
- 3 levels of problems and what we are supposed to do in each case
- Determine what I need to do to rectify it

Q
III. I don’t know what it is or how serious
A
- This is an area that I am probably weakest in
- Working hard to learn components and systems
- Working on spending time down with fleet mechanics when schedule lightens up
- Give examples of braking systems, auxiliary braking, foam pump system
- I have a lot of mentors who I can reach out to when I have a question; send video/pic

Q
IV. My captain does not agree with taking the truck OOS
A
- First I need to double check myself; use the captain as a resource for bouncing ideas off of
- If I am convinced that it needs to go OOS explain, show, persuade, and patch to respected engineers or mechanic
- I have respect for the captain’s authority and I would not usurp it lightly, but the safety card trumps all authority
- Ultimately, I am responsible for the safety of the crew and public and I will unilaterally take us out of service if necessary
