4. What's the difference between maintenance and repair? (pt 2) Flashcards
Explain the difference between maintenance and repair
III. Maintenance (main topics)
- Definition
- Goal
- Examples
III. Maintenance
1. Definition
A. As mentioned before, maintence is keeping apparatus and equipment in a usable state.
B. Vehicles or equipment that is in a good state of repair has likely been well maintained.
III. Maintenance
2. Goal
A. The goal of preventive maintenance is to eliminate unexpected and catastrophic failures that may endanger fire-fighters and the general public.
B. Preventive maintenance also helps to:
- Importance
B. Preventive maintenance also helps to:
i. ensure reliability,
ii. reduce the frequency and cost of re-pairs,
iii. and reduces out-of-service time.
III. Maintenance
3. Examples
A. Some basic preventive maintenance tasks may be performed by the driver/ operator,
B. Such as keeping levels within parameters–like with tire pressure and fluid levels
C. While others are normally carried out by apparatus mechanics.
D. Also many systems need to be operated on a regular basis to be maintained
- Examples
C. Exercising our systems are important to keeping them maintained
i. Fire pump
ii. Foam pump
iii. Saws
iv. Generators
v. Valves and drains
IV. Repair
1. Definition
A. Repair by contrast means to restore that which has become inoperable
B. Most repairs will need to be made by apparatus mechanics
C. But some can be done by the engineer:
IV. Repair
1. Definition
C. But some can be done by the engineer:
i. Example: during a Sunday drill the discharge pressure was fluctuating dramatically after charging one line
ii. We shut it down and found that the engine cooler line had become disconnected from the compression fitting
iii. It took about an hour to identify and fix the problem, but it kept us from having to do a changeover

V. Documentation (main topics)
- Importance
V. Documentation
1. Importance
A. There are numerous reasons documentation is important. Here are a few:
B. pass on: Engineers can review records to see what problems have been reported and areas for possible reoccurrence—
C. Warranty claims: records show required maintenance was performed
D. Liability: maintenance records are among those likely to be scrutinized by investigators in the event of an accident,
E. Budgeting: assists in determining whether to purchase a new apparatus or continue to repair older vehicle
