- In addition to being responsible for the safety of citizens, I am also accountable for the welfare of my crew and co-workers
- As an engineer I divide this into two overlapping areas:
- Preparation for Emergencies
- Operation During Emergencies

VI. Preparation for Emergencies
A
- Engineers play a pivotal role in making sure their apparatus, equipment, and crews are prepared to respond to emergencies
- This is done primarily through the pre-trip inspection, operational readiness inspections, and functional checks
- One of the first things I do coming on in the morning is make sure that I have an accurate passport with everybody’s par tags and that everybody has the proper helmet tags
- Engineers are responsible to fully understand their truck and its capabilities and how to operate all the equipment on the truck

VII. Operation During Emergencies
A
- Engineers also play an important role during emergency operations
- One of the primary tasks of the engineer is to get the crew to and from the emergency scene safely
- And to work to make sure everybody goes home in the same condition they arrived
- Besides other obvious functions and responsibilities of the engineer, there are two essential roles that engineers play:

- The first is an accountability officer
- Accountability is a critical element in maintaining the safety of all firefighters working on the fireground..
- On emergency scenes I will act as the first accountability officer, especially for crews that take handlines off of my truck:

- Collect passports from crews; make sure par tsgs are accurate
- Places hose tags and passport on discharge gates
- Monitor area of operation

- The second role that I play is a safety officer
- 1st safety officer on scene
- Even though everybody is a safety officer, I think engineers are often in a place to make sure their crews are safe in a way that others are not able to:

- They are outside the structure fire and can see developments interior crews dont
- Ladder engineers are often able to watch over their crew as they ventilate
- They can even act as a monitor for their firefighters during crew training
