Q
I. Introduction
A
- Technically speaking, engineers are an Informal second in command of the crew
- But we know that the position doesn’t make a person a leader
- We have great leaders at all levels of this organization whether in a recognized leadership position or not
- Having said that, I do believe engineers are the backbone of the department
- they play a very important role in the function of our crews

Q
II. Military Example
A
- In the Rangers each platoon was led by a Platoon leader and a platoon sergeant.
- The platoon leader was an officer and had overall command.
- The platoon sergeant was an enlisted non-commissioned officer and was second in command.
- The platoon leader led more from the front while the platoon sergeant led more from behind and made sure the platoon had all the support for success.
- I view captains as equivalent to the platoon leader and engineers to platoon sergeant.

- Because there is less of a separation, Engineers can be more connected to the crew than captains
- Can see patterns and concerning trends and intervene
