5.4 Water Properties & pH Flashcards
What are the 5 water properties?
Cohesion & Adhesion, Solvent, Density, High Specific Heat, and Heat of Vaporization.
What is cohesion?
Bonding between two water molecules.
What is adhesion?
Bonding between a water molecule and another different molecule.
What is solvent?
A solvent dissolves a solute, creating a solution.
What is density?
Ice is less dense than water.
What is high specific heat?
The amount of energy it takes to heat 1g of a substance by 1 degree Celsius.
What is heat of vaporization?
The amount of heat it takes for 1g of a substance to boil.
What is pH?
Potential hydrogen.
What is pOH?
Potential hydroxide.
Properties of acidic substances.
pH<7 and [H3O+]>[OH-]
Properties of basic substances.
pH>7 and [H3O+]<[OH-]
Properties of neutral substances.
pH=7 and [H3O+]=[OH-]
