8.3 Transcription Flashcards
What is the definition of transcription?
Copying parts of DNA to make RNA
What is the definition of central dogma?
DNA makes RNA makes proteins
What is an enhancer?
An additional binding site that acts as a switch and controls how much RNA is made
What is a promoter?
The start site of transcription, the TATA box, which signals for transcription factors to attach.
What is an exon?
A sequence of DNA that will be present in the mRNA
What is an intron?
A sequence of DNA that will be spliced
What is the first stage of transcription?
Transcription factors bind to the promoter, attract RNA polymerase, and start copying
What is the second stage of transcription?
The RNA polymerase breaks free, adds a 5’ cap, and proteins splice the introns.
What is the third stage of transcription?
The termination sequence is recognized and a poly-A tail is added
