2.1 Population Metrics Flashcards
What are the 4 population metrics?
Size of population, density, population range, pattern of spacing.
What is density?
Organisms/area
What are the ways to find the size of a population?
Direct count, indirect count, random sampling, and mark & recapture.
What is direct count?
Counting every single individual.
What is indirect count?
Count every organism in one area, then multiply by how many areas of equal landmass there are.
What is random sampling?
of organisms in a sample / area of the sample = total # of organisms / total area.
What is mark & recapture?
or marked organisms / total # of organisms = recaptured organisms with marks / total # of recaptured organisms.
What are the three patterns of spacing?
Uniform, clumped, and random.
What is uniform spacing?
Organisms are in a pattern.
What is clumped spacing?
Organisms are in groups.
What is random spacing?
Organisms are all over the place.
What factors affect the size of population?
Biotic, abiotic, and intrinsic.
What is an example of a biotic factor?
Parasites
What is an example of an abiotic factor?
Sunlight
What is an example of a intrinsic factor?
Adaptations
