5.2 Chemical Bonding Flashcards
What are covalent bonds?
Bonding in which two molecules share or fight over electrons.
What are polar covalent bonds?
Covalent bonds between two molecules that have different electronegativities.
What are ionic bonds?
Bonds in which one molecule takes an electron from another.
What types of molecules do covalent bonding?
2 nonmetals.
What types of molecules do ionic bonding?
1 metal and 1 nonmetal.
How does covalent bonding work?
The molecules are pulled together, then pushed apart, and they form bonds by sharing electrons.
How does polar covalent bonding work?
The same as normal covalent bonding, but one molecule has a higher electronegativity, so it pulls harder.
How does ionic bonding work?
Two opposite molecules are pulled together, and one molecule takes an electron from another, so they are both ions.
How does electronegativity determine what type of bonds form?
Low electronegativity forms covalent bonds, medium forms polar covalent bonds, and high forms ionic bonds.
