5.1 Enzymes Flashcards
What is an Enzyme?
Proteins that help speed up chemical reactions.
What is a substrate?
A surface where an Enzyme can act.
What is an active site?
Where the substrate connects to the enzyme.
What is rate of reaction?
How fast and how many reactions occur.
what is activation energy?
The amount of energy that is used for a reaction to occur.
What are the properties of enzymes?
-Reaction specific
-Not consumed in reaction
-Made of protein
-Affected by cellular conditions
Enzyme concentration
The more enzymes the more successful collisions. Too many enzymes and you may run out of substrate.
Substrate concentration
The more substrate the more successful collisions until there’s not enough enzymes.
Temperature
As it gets hotter the particles move faster and the reaction rate increases but if it gets too hot reactions decrease.
pH
Optimal pH, just like temperature, anywhere around the optimal pH is where reactions decrease.
