1.3 experimental design Flashcards
What is the format for a hypothesis?
The <topic> (is caused by, is due to, depends on) <specific>. If <Independent> <Increases> then <dependent> <increases>, because ...</increases></dependent></Increases></Independent></specific></topic>
What is an example of a hypothesis?
The plant growth depends on the amount of fertilizer. If the amount of fertilizer increases then the mass of the plant increases, because fertilizer helps plants grow faster.
What is a independent variable?
The variable that changes in an experiment.
What is a dependent variable?
The variable that is being measured.
What is a control in an experiment?
A group where nothing is changed. Where we can make comparisons off of.
Why is a control group important?
A control group is important because it lets us make accurate comparisons.
What does an error bar do?
An error bar gives us an idea if our data is statistically significant.
This amount of overlap means the data is not very precise.
Lots of overlap
This amount of overlap means the data is very precise.
no overlap
What is a good example of a control group in an experiment?
When the independent variable is the amount of fertilizer, the control group would be a group with no fertilizer.
