1.1 study of biology Flashcards
What does CER stand for?
Claim, Evidence, Reasoning
What does PMC stand for?
Program, Metabolism, Container
What is the smallest level of organization?
Atom
What is the largest level of organization?
Organism
What does metabolism help with?
Energy production and waste production
What is the program of a living thing?
DNA/RNA
What does CER do?
It helps make arguments vitalizing
What is a CER that explains whether a virus is living or nonliving?
Claim: A virus is a nonliving thing.
Evidence: A virus does not have the characteristics of a living thing such as energy production, carbon source, or growth. Compared to a living thing like a dog, a virus does not meet the same criteria that the dog does.
Reasoning: All living things need a carbon source. A sponge, for example, has a carbon source of carbohydrates. A virus however does not have a carbon source making it nonliving.
Which level of organization is bigger, Communities or ecosystems? why?
Ecosystems are bigger because communities only include the living things while ecosystems include both living and nonliving things.
What is an example of a cell? why?
Eukaryote or prokaryote are examples of cells because they aren’t just a part of a cell like an organelle and they aren’t a bunch of cells that make up tissues.
