2.4 properties of water Flashcards
Cohesion and Adhesion
Cohesion is H bonding between H2O molecules.
Adhesion is H bonding between H2O and other molecules.
Solvent
Solvents dissolve solutes creating a solution. Polarity makes water a good solvent.
Specific heat
The amount of energy it takes to heat up 1 gram of a substance by 1 degree Celsius.
heat of vaporization
The amount of energy it takes for 1 gram of water to evaporate.
concentration
How much solute is in a solvent or solution.
pH or pOH
pH measures [H3O+] on a logarithmic scale. pOH measures [OH-].
Hydroxide and hydronium
Hydroxide is [OH-], pOH
Hydronium is [H3O+], pH
Acid and Base
Acids have pH under 7 and Bases have pH over 7.
Properties of water
cohesion and adhesion
solvent of life
hydrophillic/ phobic
specific heat
vaporazation
Why are the properties of water important to life?
Water mixes with other substances easily making it easy to create new things.
What is the pH if the pOH is 5?
pH is 9
pH is 7. Acid or Base?
Neutral
pH is 11. Acid or Base
