4.3 transcription Flashcards
What happens during the initiation phase of transcription?
Transcription factors will bind to the promoter.
RNA polymerase will start copying gene sequence into mRNA.
What happens during the elongation phase of transcription?
RNA pol breaks free of TF.
A protective 5’ cap is added to RNA.
Proteins are recruited to splice the introns.
What happens during the termination phase of transcription?
A poly A tail is added.
How are DNA and RNA different?
Helix shape and 5’ and 3’ are on opposite sides.
How are DNA and RNA the same?
Hydrogen bonds and they use the same bases.
What happens during alternative splicing?
proteins splice out the introns and then reconnect the two strands.
What does the promoter do?
It is the start site of transcription.
What is the enhancer?
An additional binding site for transcription factors.
What are Exons?
Sequences that will be present in the mRNA.
