5 liver anatomy and function Flashcards
what separates the 2 lobes?
falciform ligament
What is different about the 8 segments?
blood supply and bile drainage
What is liver stroma?
connective tissue, with many different collagens, and glycoprotein links to cells. Integrins allow bi-directinoal communication between cells
What is in the middle and points of hepatic lobules?
central vein
surrounded by sinusoids connecting it to 3 portal tracts
What are the structure of bile drainage from smallest to largest?
bile canaliculi
canal of Herin
bile duct
what cells are within the sinusoids?
blood from hepatic artery and portal vein
kupffer cells
What are the funcitons of epithelium lining the sinusoids?
antri-thrombogenic agent
regulation of leukocytes
removal of waste products
Where are Stellate cells found, where are they?
in the space of disse, for perisinusoidal fat storage
What are Kupffer cells?
hepatic macrophage
What are the 6 main hepatic functions?
Digestion Cholesterol Synthesis Bile production Immune function Detoxificaiton and elimination synthesis
How does a liver ‘digest’?
metabolises carbs and fats
stores vitamins and minerals
How do statins inhibit cholesterol synthesis?
inhibit the HMG-CoA reductase step in cholesterol synthesis
About how much bile can be stored in the gall bladder?
300-400ml
How does the liver help with excretion?
urinary excretion (hydrophilics) biliary ecretion (lipophilics)
What does the liver synthesise?
albumin fibrocentctin plasminogen tranferrin - iron absorption hepcidin
