4.5: Species & Taxonomy Flashcards
Define species
a group of organisms that can INTERBREED and produce FERTILE offspring
Describe what courtship behaviour is and how it is carried out
Courtship behaviour recognises members of their own species, individuals that are sexually mature, and results in synchronised mating (both members do want tea)
Involves a chain of reactions between the male and female, this chain of actions is the same for all members of a species but differs from members of a different species
What is a hierarchy
Different levels in a system, where larger groups are subdivided into smaller groups, with NO OVERLAP and based on SHARED CHARACTERISTICS
What is each group in a hierarchy called
a taxon
taxa = plural
LIst the 8 taxa in the biological hierarchy
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, species
What is the acronym for remembering the 8 taxa in the biological hierarchy?
Dirty King Philip Came Over For Group sex
When given the binomial of a species, what is the genus and what is the species and how can you identify this
First name is the Genus, as it has a capital first letter
Second name is the species, as it has a lowercase first letter
What are the 2 factors that the phylogenetic system of classification is based upon
1- shared characteristics
2- evolutionary relationships
What is a phylogenetic tree useful for
Identifying how closely related two species are (the closer they are, the more recent common ancestor they share)
