3.4.1.2: The Cardiac cycle Flashcards
what is the cardiac cycle
a sequence of events that happen in a single heartbeat, consists of the alternating systole and diastole of cardiac muscles
in what direction will blood always flow, and how is this managed
down a pressure gradient, change of pressure is managed by the change of volume in chamber - contracting and relaxing cardiac muscles
describe the atrial systole
volume of atria decreases, pressure in atria increases, blood flows from atria to ventricles, AV valves are open and SL valves are close
describe the ventricle systole
volume of ventricles decreases, pressure in ventricles increases, blood flows from ventricles to arteries, AV valves are close and SL valves are open
describe the diastole of atria and ventricles
volume of atria and ventricles increases, pressure in atria and ventricles decreases, blood flows from veins to atria, and and atria to ventricles. AV valves are open and SL valves are close
