Q

Explain the three pathwayas for preganglionic sympathetic axons

A
  1. exit at spinal cord level, synapse in the PARAvertebral ganglia at the same level, (rejoin the spinal nerve), travel to target
  2. exit at spinal cord level, ascend / descend within the sympathetic chain, synapse in a PARAvertebral ganglia and exit (rejoin the spinal nerve) at that level
  3. exit at spinal cord level, enter and exit the sympathetic chain without synapsing, synapse in a PREvertebral sympathetic ganglia (ie become a splanchnic nerve), follow the blood vessels to target

Q

What is a splanchnic nerve

A

parasympathetic axon that exit at spinal cord level, enter and exit the sympathetic chain without synapsing, synapse in a PREvertebral sympathetic ganglia, follow the blood vessels to target
