4.5 neuro - sympathetic nervous system Flashcards
1
Q
what levels of the spinal cord have preganglionic neurons
A
T1-L2
2
Q
Explain the three pathwayas for preganglionic sympathetic axons
A
- exit at spinal cord level, synapse in the PARAvertebral ganglia at the same level, (rejoin the spinal nerve), travel to target
- exit at spinal cord level, ascend / descend within the sympathetic chain, synapse in a PARAvertebral ganglia and exit (rejoin the spinal nerve) at that level
- exit at spinal cord level, enter and exit the sympathetic chain without synapsing, synapse in a PREvertebral sympathetic ganglia (ie become a splanchnic nerve), follow the blood vessels to target
3
Q
What is a splanchnic nerve
A
parasympathetic axon that exit at spinal cord level, enter and exit the sympathetic chain without synapsing, synapse in a PREvertebral sympathetic ganglia, follow the blood vessels to target
4
Q
Where are paravertebral ganglia
A
beside the vertebral column
5
Q
Where are prevertebral ganglia
A
anterior to the vertebral column
6
Q
Where along the spinal column are sympathetic ganglia found
A
from the carotid bifurcation to the pelvis
