1.3 neuro - meninges Flashcards
Function of the meninges
Surround the entire CNS
* Protect
* Support vascular elements
* Enclose subarachnoid space
Three layers of the meninges, superficial to deep
- Dura mater
- Subarachnoid mater
- Pia mater
Two layers of the dura mater
- Periosteal
- Meningeal
Specializations of the dura mater
- Falx cerebri
- Falx cerebelli
- Tentorium cerebelli
Location of the falx cerebri
In between cerebral hemispheres
Location of falx cerebelli
In between cerebellar hemispheres
Location of tentorium cerebelli
Perpendicular to falx cerebri and falx cerebelli, under occipital lobe, over cerebellum
Where are dural sinuses found
Within the falx cerebri and tentorium cerebelli
Relative location of inferior sagittal sinus
Runs inferior to the falx cerebri
Relative location of superior sagittal sinus
Runs superior to the falx cerebri
Relative location of straight sinus
Runs along the falx cerebri / tentorium cerebelli junction
Relative location of transverse sinus
Runs along lateral edges of tentorium cerebelli
Where do sinuses drain to
Internal jugular vein
Components of arachnoid matter
- Filled with cerebrospinal fluid
- Blood vessels suspended in arachnoid
- Subarachnoid space underneath
What do arachnoid granulations do
Reabsorb CSF and return it to venous circulation
