4.3 neuro - cerebellum Flashcards
Function of cerebellum
maintains posture and balance, active in learning and performing rapid, coordinated, highly skilled movement
monitors actual movement by recieving information from proprioceptors and compares command signals with sensory input
sends out corrective feedback to upper motor neurons if intended and actual movement don’t align
Does the cerebellum send and receive information contralaterally or ipsilaterally
ipsilaterally
What do basal nuclei do vs what does the cerebellum do
basal nuclei chooses motor behavior, cerebellum monitors and corrects
How is the cerebellum attached to the brain stem
by 3 paired peduncles, superior inferior and middle
Where do the superior cerebellar peduncle fibers project
to the motor thalamus then to the cortex
Where do the inferior cerebellar peduncle fibers project
enter from the medulla and spinal cord
Where do the middle cerebellar peduncle fibers project
enter from the pons
What is the vermis
midline structure of the cerebellum
What are the 3 cell layers of the cerebellum
molecular layer (superficial): lots of connections few neurons
purkinje layer: projects to deep cerebellar nuclei
granule layer: lots of cells and lots of connections and neurons
Flow of information in the cerebellum
Information arrives via the inferior and middle cerebellar peduncles and is processed in the cerebellar cortex, purkinje cells project to deep cerebellar nuclei, deep nuclei send out information via the superior cerebellar peduncle
