4.5 + 4.6 Moments & Equilibrium, Couples, Torques Flashcards
what is a moment?
- a force producing a turning effect
- perpendicular distance D from point to line of action
anti clockwise or clockwise
how can the moment of a force be increased?
turn power
- increasing the size of the force
- increasing the distance from the pivot
what is the principle of moments ?
components in every plane are balanced
sum of clockwise momets= sum of anti clockwise moments
what is the support force?
force where a body is in contact with a surface
no moment as has 0 distance from pivot
what is the relevence of the support force when the body is in equilibrium?
support force up = all forces acting down
what happens when there are two supports?
when taking the pivot around, you must take into account the moment of the support force from the second force
What is a couple?
A pair of forces which give rise to a resultant moment, but no resultant force
What is a torque?
The moment of a couple.
For a pair of equal forces acting in opposite directions separated by distance d, the torque is
