Q

define gravitational potential

A

the work done per unit mass in displacing a body from infinity to that point
(work done to pull the body from no field into that place in the field )

infinity is the distance at which the field does not exist

A

IGNORE PHOTO.
U is negative representing how energy is required to move the object out of the field

Q

what is escape velocity?

A

the minimum velocity required in order for a non propelled body to escape the gravitational pull of a planet. GPE=KE

Q

what are the assumptions of escape velocity?

A
  • minimum velocity: assumes that all KE is transferred to GPE, unrealistic if the planet has an atmosphere
  • non- propelled: all KE ins imparted in one go with no further transfers
  • escape: realstically you cannot and won’t go to infity in order to longer feel the pull
