18.4 + 18.5 Keplars Laws And Satellites Flashcards
What is Kepler’s 1st Law?
All planets move about the sun in elliptical orbits, having the sun as one of the focal points
What is eccentricity?
How skinny the ellipse is
What is Kepler’s 2nd Law?
(Equal time, equal area). The radius vector joining any planet to the sun sweeps out equal are in equal lengths of time.
(Conservation of angular momentum)
What is Kepler’s 3rd Law?
The square of the orbital period T of a planet is directly proportional to the cube of it’s average distance r from the sun
Derive the full expression for Kepler’s 3rd Law
What is a geostationary satellite?
A satellite that has a time period of exactly 24 hours. Only orbit the earth above the equator. (Constant orbital distance )
