Mental WB continuum
A tool used to track fluctuating mental WB.
Internal factors
Factors that arise from within an individual.
- eg. stress response, thought patterns, genetic predisposition.
External factors
Factors that arise from an individual’s environment.
- eg. loss of significant relationship, level of education, experiencing difficulty with certain environments, access to support services.
Stress
A psychological + physiological experience that occurs when an individual encounters something of significance that demands their attention and/or efforts to cope.
Stress - distinguishing factors
Sympathetic NS becomes dominant, response is to known stimulus, distress or eustress, adaptive or maladaptive, fluctuate between high or low levels depending on severity + length.
Anxiety
A psychological + physiological response that involves feelings of worry + apprehension about a perceived threat.
Anxiety - distinguishing factors
Sympathetic NS becomes dominant, response might be to an unknown stimulus, distress only, adaptive or maladaptive, fluctuates between high or low levels depending on severity + length.
Specific phobia
A type of diagnosable anxiety disorder that is categorised by excessive + disproportionate fear when encountering or anticipating the encounter of a particular stimulus.
Specific phobia - distinguishing factors
Sympathetic NS becomes dominant, response is to known stimulus, distress only, always maladaptive, associated with low levels of mental WB always.
