Sleep deprivation
Inadequate quality/quantity of sleep.
Full sleep deprivation
When an individual has no sleep within a 24-hour period.
Partial sleep deprivation
When an individual sleeps for some duration during a 24-hour period but quality + quantity is poor.
Affective effects
Changes in emotions + emotional response.
- Irritability + moodiness
- Increase in negative emotions
- Reduced ability to cope with stress
- Poor emotional regulation/amplified emotional responses.
Behavioural effects
Changes in actions + the ability to control them.
- Increase likelihood of risk-taking behaviours.
- Fatigue/lack of energy
- Slowed reaction time
- Excessive sleepiness during the day
Cognitive effects
Changes in mental processes
- Reduced concentration
- Impairment of STM
- Less ability to perform cognitive tasks
- Lapses in attention
- Impaired decision making + problem solving.
Blood alcohol concentration (BAC)
Measure of how much alcohol is in a person’s bloodstream.
- Slows down NS functioning + decrease alertness, concentration, reflexes, + decision making.
