1.6 evaluating research Flashcards
Accuracy
How close a measurement is to the true value of the quantity being measured.
Precision
How closely a set of measurement values agree with each other.
Systematic errors
Errors that differ from the true value by a consistent amount.
- May be due to environmental factors, observational/research errors, incorrect measurement instrument calibration.
Random errors
Errors that are unsystematic + occur due to change.
Repeatability
When the same results are achieved when the experiment is repeated under identical conditions.
Reproducibility
Experiment is repeated under different conditions but produce same results.
Internal validity
Extent to which an investigation truly measures what it claims to.
External validity
Extend to which an investigation can be applied to similar individuals in a different setting.
