3.2.5 (5B) - brain structures Flashcards
1
Q
Hippocampus
A
- ENCODES + consolidates EXPLICIT memories (semantic + episodic).
- AND retrieves episodic memories (not semantic).
2
Q
Amygdala
A
- ENCODES EMOTIONAL content in IMPLICIT + EXPLICIT memories.
- AND involved in CC’d EMOTIONAL responses (eg. fear).
3
Q
Neocortex
A
- LONG-TERM store of EXPLICIT memories.
- AND INTERACTS with the BASAL GANGLIA and CEREBELLUM to store IMPLICIT PROCEDURAL memories (du to primary motor cortex - skeletal muscles).
4
Q
Basal ganglia
A
- HABITUAL learning (growing accustomed to a situation of stimulus eg. clock ticking).
- Plays a role in IMPLICIT PROCEDURAL memory via interactions with the neocortex + the cerebellum.
5
Q
Cerebellum
A
- Plays a role in IMPLICIT PROCEDURAL memory via interactions with the neocortex + the basal ganglia.
- AND CC MOTOR RESPONSES/SIMPLE REFLEXES (eg. blinking to a puff of air).
6
Q
Explicit memories
A
With awareness
(semantic + episodic)
7
Q
Semantic memories
A
Facts/knowledge
8
Q
Episode memories
A
Personally experienced/autobiographical events
9
Q
Implicit memories
A
Without awareness
(procedural + classically conditioned).
10
Q
Procedural memories
A
‘How to’
11
Q
Classically conditioned memories
A
Fear or reflexes.
