3.2.2 (4C) - observational learning Flashcards
Social learning
Suggests that it is possible for people to learn through observing.
Socio-cognitive approaches to learning
Propose that learning takes place in a social setting + involves various cognitive functions.
Observational learning
Learning that involves watching the behaviour of a model + the associated consequences of that behaviour.
Attention
Individuals actively focus on model’s behaviour + it’s consequences.
Retention
Where individuals create a mental representation to remember the model’s demonstrated behaviour.
Reproduction
Individuals must have physical + mental capabilities to replicate the behaviour.
Motivation
Individual must want to reproduce the behaviour.
- Intrinsic - occurs from within (eg. desire).
Extrinsic - occurs from external factors (eg. desire to receive praise from teachers).
Reinforcement
Individual receives a positive consequence for behaviour, making them more likely to reproduce behaviour again in the future.
Self-reinforcement
Reinforced through external factors (eg. proud of self).
External reinforcement
Reinforced through external factors (eg. receiving award).
Vicarious reinforcement
Reinforced by observing reinforcement of another person performing the same behaviour (can enhance despite not being directly reinforced).
