4.1.5 (7B) - circadian rhythm sleep disorders Flashcards
Sleep disorders
Disturbances to typical sleeping + waking patterns - results in sleep deprivation.
Circadian rhythm sleep disorders
Sleep disorders that interfere with the typical regulation of the circadian rhythm of sleep, leading to a change in the sleep-wake cycle.
Delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS)
Type of circadian rhythm sleep disorder where sleep + waking occur later than usual.
Advanced sleep phase disorder (ASPD)
Type of circadian rhythm sleep disorder in which sleeping + waking occur earlier than usual.
Shift work
Occupation that involves working unusual hours such as overnight or rotating roster (eg. nurse, hospitality, etc).
Treatment - bright light therapy (BLT)
Method used to adjust a person’s circadian rhythm through exposure to high-intensity light source.
Factors essential to BLT
- Appropriate timing of exposure.
- Right amount of light.
- Safe exposure.
BLT as treatment
DSPS - exposed to light in morning - help melatonin release earlier.
ASPD - exposed to light at night/when feeling sleepy - help melatonin released later.
Shift work - depends but common to be exposed before beginning shift to promote wakefulness + cease melatonin release.
