40. Definition of the dentally originated cysts. Dental implants. Flashcards
- Cyst
a/ Definition of dentally originated cysts
1/ An epithelium lined sac, surrounded by a connective tissue wall. It is usually filled with fluid or soft material.
2/ A cyst is a tumor-like formation, that can originate from a a developmental disorder, or an inflammatory process.
3/ It is actually not a tumor, because its growth is not due to cell proliferation (it expands, does not infiltrate).
- Cyst
b/ What are location of cysts?
Treatment is determined per cyst location
1/ radicular (periapical)
2/ follicular cyst
3/ apical periodontal
4/ keratocyst
5/ Residual
1/ Cyst
c/ Characteristics of radicular cyst
- Endodontic
- most common
- most common
- caused by inflammation of periodontal tissue

1/ lower wisdom or permanent upper canines around the crown of unerupted tooth
2/ rapid expansion

h/ How does cyst appear in X-ray?
appears as dark area on X-ray with well-defined margins
1/ Cyst
I/ treatment options for cysts
1/ drainage
2/ surgically removed
- if cyst is associated with an infected root canal, endodontic therapy is required

j/ Symptoms of cysts
symptoms: gum swelling, displacement of teeth, pressure sensitivity, sore tooth, face numbness
- Dental implants
a/ What is dental implantology?
1/ Oral / dental / implantology is a new interdisciplinary field of dentistry
2/ its aim is the prosthetic rehabilitation, but it also uses surgical, periodontal and orthodontic methods.
- Dental implants
b/ What type of material can be used for implants
1/ Titanium (screw type)
2/ Zirconium oxide
- Dental implants
c/ Principles of implant placement
Osseointegration: Direct contact between the implant and the osseous tissue
- Dental implants
d/ What are implant requirements?
1/ Sterile
2/ Non-allergic
3/ Suitable for osseointegration material
