35. Classification of cavities. Principles of cavity preparation by Black. Flashcards
I. Classification of cavities
a/ What is Black classification based on?
On predilection spots of caries on the anatomical crown (unit the cement-enamel junction)
I. Classification of cavities
b/ How many classes does the classification have?
- Class I - V (original)
Later added classes…
2. Class VI: not predilection area (e.g, top of the cusp)
3. Root surface caries: not on the anatomical crown
I. Classification of cavities
c/ What does class I have?
Class I - pits and fissures cavities
I. Classification of cavities
d/ What does class II have?
Class II - Cavities on the proximal surface of posterior (premolar and molar) teeth (MO, OD, MOD)
I. Classification of cavities
e/ What does class III have?
Class III - Cavities on the proximal surface of anterior teeth, incisal edge is intact
I. Classification of cavities
f/ What does class IV have?
Class IV - Cavities on the proximal surfaces of anterior teeth that involves the incisal edge
I. Classification of cavities
g/ What does class V have?
Cavities on the gingival third of the anatomical crown (bucal/oral)→ smooth surface caries
I. Classification of cavities
h/ What does class VI have?
Class VI - Cavities on the incisal edge of anterior teeth, or on the occlusal cusp of posterior teeth→not predilection spot
I. Classification of cavities
I/ What are the root surface caries
Caries develops on the root surface (cementum; clinical crown)
II. What are Black principles of cavity preparation?
◦Aim: to prevent secunder caries
◦The border of cavity should be extended to areas that aare normally self-cleaning, or cleasable
=> therefore, healthy tooth structure can be removed
