4. Periodontal diseases: form, pathology and diagnostics Flashcards
- Definition of periodontal disease
Periodontal disease is a type of disease that affects one or more of the periodontal tissues: alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, cementum, gingiva
- What are the 2 types of periodontal diseases?
1/ Gingivitis (Inflammation of the gum tissue)
2/ Periodontitis
- Gingivitis (Inflammation of the gum tissue)
a/ What are characteristics of Gingivitis (Inflammation of the gum tissue)?
‣ plaque-induced inflammatory lesion
‣ A non-destructive periodontal disease
- Gingivitis (Inflammation of the gum tissue)
b/ What are symptoms of Gingivitis (Inflammation of the gum tissue)?
- Swollen gums
- Bright red or purple gums
- Gums that are tender or painful to the touch
- Bleeding gums or bleeding after (Even with gentle brushing or flossing)
- emit an unpleasant odor.
- Gingivitis (Inflammation of the gum tissue)
c/ What happen if we left the gingivitis untreated?
gingivitis may progress to periodontitis, which is a destructive form of periodontal disease.
- Periodontitis
a/ Definition of periodontitis?
‣ plaque-induced inflammatory lesion
‣ A destructive periodontal disease
‣ Inflammatory diseases affecting the tissues that surround and support the teeth
- Periodontitis
b/ What is the cause of periodontitis?
Caused by microorganisms that adhere to and grow on the tooth’s surfaces, along with an overly aggressive immune response against these microorganisms
- Periodontitis
c/ Characteristics of periodontitis?
1/ Periodontal pocket formation
2/ Gingival ulcer, purulent exudation
3/ Destruction of the alveolar bone and the periodontal ligaments
- Involves progressive loss of the alveolar bone around the teeth, and if left untreated, can lead to the loosening and subsequent loss of teeth..
4/ Teeth become loose, shifting, loss of the tooth can occur
