3D.1 Wave-Particle Duality Flashcards
what is Huygens principile
very simply Huygens principle states that every single point on a wavefront is a source of circular waves traveling forward where all the superpositions of the waves make up a new wavefront
why is light considered a wave
1, it undergoes both destructive and constructive interference
- it forms a superposition
- it undergoes polarisation
what are photons
packets of electromagnetic radiation energy (E=hf)
what is the formula for calculating the energy of a photon
E = hf
what is the value for plank constant
6.63 x 10^-34 J s
why can’t we have a photon with lower energy than plan constant
because it is the lowest possible step in energy
what is quantisation
it is a system in which there is the smallest minimum amount by which the quantity can change
what is the speed of electromagnetic waves
3 x 10^8
why is an electron a particle
because it has a fixed mass and charge
are electrons waves
when electrons travel really fast they show wave-like behavior with forming a diffraction pattern when passing through gaps and also forming interference pattern when they pass through a double-slit apparatus
what is the evidence that makes light act like a particle
the photoelectric effect
what is wave-particle duality
it is the principle that a substance can behave as a wave under certain circumstances and a particle under certain circumstances
