1A.4 moments Flashcards
what is the moment of a force
the tendency to cause rotations
moment =
moment (Nm) = force (N) X distance (m)
if the resultant force is zero what does that tell us
that the object is at equilibrium so it will remain stationary or keep moving at a constant velocity
what is the principle of moment
the total of all the moments trying to turn the object clockwise is equal to the total moments trying to turn the object anti-clockwise. making it at equilibrium so it will stay stationary or keep rotating at the same speed
what is the centre of gravity
it is the place where all the weight forces trying to pull the object down come from
how do we find the centre of gravity in symmetrical shapes
it is where all the lines of symmetry intersect
