3.3 Haloalkanes Flashcards
How is the ozone formed?
O2 –UV–> 2O⚫️
O2 + O⚫️ -> O3 Ozone
How do CFCs break this down?
When used and released in the atmosphere CFCs catalyse the break down of O3
CCl3F –UV–> ⚫️CCl2F + Cl⚫️
Cl⚫️ + O3 -> ClO⚫️ + O2
ClO⚫️ + O3 -> 2O2 + Cl⚫️
So in total, it catalyses:
2O3 -> 3O2
What are CFCs?
ChloroFluroCarbons were useful as non toxic non flammable chemicals used in fire extinguishers, propellants and coolants.
What was the issue with CFCs?
In 1970 they were banned as they were breaking down the ozone after investigations and scientific research. They are now replaced with HCFCs and HFCs as temporary less damaging replacements.
What is a nucleophile?
An electron pair donator
What is the ozone layer?
A chemical layer which can absorb UV Rays.
