1.5 Kinetics Flashcards
What is activation energy?
Activation energy or Ea is the min. amount of kinetic energy required for particles to react
How does temperature affect the rate of reaction?
It increases it as the amount of kinetic energy increases, particle movement increases so more molecules have Ea and can react.
How does concentration affect rate of reaction?
As the number of particles increase, the space between them decreases so more frequent collisions occur.
How does pressure affect the rate of reaction?
The volume decreases so space between molecules decreases so more frequent collisions occur.
How does a catalyst affect the rate of reaction.
A catalyst reduce the Ea without being used up by providing an alternate reaction route of lower Ea.
What is a Maxwell Botlzmann distribution?
This is a graph which shows the number of particles, their most likely energy, their mean energy and the Ea
What is the rate of reaction?
The decrease in concentration or reactants
OR
The increase in concentration of products
per the unit of time
What is collision theory?
Reactions will only take place is two particles collide in the right direction with sufficient kinetic energy
