1.7 Redox Flashcards
Oxidation is…
the loss of electrons
Reduction is…
the gain of electron
An oxidising agent
brings about oxidation
by itself being reduced and gaining electrons.
A reducing agent
brings about reduction
by itself being oxidised and losing electrons
The sum of oxidising states in a compound must
add up to 0
unless it has an overall charge
What is an oxidation number?
The number of electrons required to make it neutral ie) Na= 0, Na+ = +1, Cl- = -1
How do you find an ionic half equation?
Balance main element,
Balance Oxygen in form of water,
Balance H+ ions
Add electrons to balance the overall charge
How do you form a redox equation?
Form two iconic half equations
Multiply up so they both have the same number of electrons
Combine and cancel out electrons (and occasionally, multiple species)
