3.10 - Mitosis and the cell cycle Flashcards
What is the role of mitosis?
Produces genetically identical cells
Used for cell growth, repair and asexual reproduction
What are the three phases in the cell cycle?
Interphase
Nuclear divivsion
Cell division
What are the phases in interphase?
G1 Phase
S Phase
G2 Phase
What is the G1 phase known for?
Cell growth
What is the S phase known for?
DNA Replication
What is the G2 phase known for?
Preperation of mitosis
What is the phases after interphase?
M Phase
In mitosis, what happens in interphase?
Includes G1, S & G2 where DNA is replicated where each chromosome consists of two sister chromatids
In Mitosis, what happens in early prophase?
Chromatin condenses into visible chromosomes.
Centrosomes (containing a pair of
centrioles) are present and move to opposite poles of the cell
In Mitosis, what happens in late prophase?
The nuclear envelope disintegrates.
Chromosomes consist of two
identical chromatids joined by a
centromere
Centrioles in the centrosomes,
develop spindle fibres that move towards the nucleus.
Nucleolus disappears
In Mitosis,
