2.2 - Cell membranes Flashcards
1
Q
What is cell membrane?
A
A phospholipid bilayer
2
Q
What are intracellular membranes for?
A
Surround all cellular organelles.
Provide basic function of separating the organelle(s) from the cytoplasm
Regulate passage of substances to and from cytoplasm.
Provide a platform for reactions to take place.
Isolate harmful substances e.g. enzymes/toxins.
3
Q
What are intrinsic proteins?
A
Glycoprotein are carbohydrate chains attached to proteins.
4
Q
What are extrinsic proteins?
A
Glycolipids are carbohydrates chains attached to phospholipids.
5
Q
What is the sandwich layer model?
A
Pre 1970s: phospholipid bilayer between 2 layers of protein
