1.1 - Mass Flow Systems Flashcards
What is a mass flow system?
A system transporting substances in bulk over a long distance down a pressure gradient
What are the features in a mass flow system?
Circulatory fluid (blood)
Pumping device to move fluid (heart)
Tubes through which fluid can circulate (blood vessels)
What is an open circulatory system?
blood is not fully contained in blood vessels
What is an closed circulatory system?
blood is fully contained in blood vessels
What is single circulation?
blood pumped from heart to respiratory organ and from there to organs / body cells and then back to heart
What is double circulation?
blood passes through the heart twice: once to lungs and back, once
to organs / body cells and back
What is systemic circulation?
carries oxygenated blood from heart to organs / body cells and returns deoxygenated blood to the heart
What is pulmonary circulation?
carries deoxygenated blood from heart to lungs and returns oxygenated blood to the heart
Why are mass flow systems needed?
carries deoxygenated blood from heart to lungs and returns oxygenated blood to the heart
