What are the three types of genetic testing?
Identifying a carrier
PGD (Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis)
Prenatal testing
What is the process of the identifying a carrier?
cell sample is taken
DNA is extracted and tested for the most common known alleles for the disease
A result will then tell you if the disease-causing-allele is present.
When is PGD tested?
In IVF the embryo is tested before imprlanted into the uterus
What is the process OD PGD?
Iremoving one cell from the embryo and testing it’s DNA for any known genetic disorders and diseases
What are the two types of prenatal testing?
Amniocentesis
. Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)
When can CVS be carried out?
8-12 weeks
When can a aminocentesis done?
15 - 17 weeks
What is the risk of miscrriage in an aminocentesis?
0.5-1%
What is the risk of miscarriage in CVS?
1.5-2%
