2.10 - Enzymes Flashcards
What is the structure of an enzyme?
Globular proteins
Bind substrates in their active site
Precise 3D shape complementary to their substrate (a very specific shape)
Made inside the cell
What is intracellular in an enzyme structure?
Some enzyme work inside the cells e.g. RNA polymerase
What is extracellular in an enzyme structure?
an enzyme structure?
Some enzymes work outside the cell e.g. amylase
What is lock and key theory?
- Random movement causes the enzyme and substrate to collide, the substrate enters the active site.
- Enzyme-substrate complex forms; charged groups attract and help bonds break or form.
- Products are released and the enzyme is unchanged ready to accept another substrate.
In lock and key theory, what is the shape of the active site?
FIXED shape
What is the induced fit theory?
The enzyme changes shape to fit the substrate when the substrate is near
What is the induced fit theory like?
To squeezing your hand into a rubber glove
What is activation energy?
Is the quantity of energy that must be put in for the reaction to begin.
What does an enzyme do to activation energy
An enzyme lowers the reaction’s activation energy.
