(3) Histopathology of Periodontal Disease - established lesion Flashcards
What dominates the inflammatory infiltrate in the established lesion? (Older people)
Plasma cells
Antibody production
What dominates the inflammatory infiltrate in the established lesion? (Younger patients)
T Lymphocytes dominate
Where is the inflammatory infiltrate located in the established lesion?
Just under the junctional and sulcular epithelium around blood vessels and collagen fibres
Why is there more destruction of collagen fibres in the established epithelium (compares to the early lesion)?
ROS production
Destruction of the gingival collagen and further proliferation of the epithelia
Can the epithelium become ulcerated in established lesion?
YES
Breakage in the epithelium
What happens if you probe the ulcerated epithelia?
Bleed
The dilated blood vessels
What type of pockets are created in the established lesion?
False pockets
Further loss of attachment of the epithelia and epithelial pocket formation and deepening
What is hyperplasia?
increased cell production in a normal tissue or organ
What is false pocketing?
Where the inflamed gingival tissue swells above the cervical region to cover part of the crown
Gingival tissue is above the norm
No loss of bone and no apical migration of the junctional epithelium/CEJ
Is the established lesion reversible?
Yes
When does the established lesion occur?
2-3 weeks
What are the main antibodies present?
IgG
IgA
