(1) Anatomy and Histology of the periodontium - Disease Flashcards
What are clinical consideration of the periodontium?
Periodontitis: loss of periodontal ligament and alveolar bone, could lead to tooth loss.
Periodontal surgery.
Orthodontic loading.
Bone atrophy with decreased functional loads.
Healing of extraction sockets.
Osteopetrosis.
Osteoporosis.
Implants.
Osteopetrosis vs osteoporosis?
Perturbation of the balance between bone formation and resorption can result in the formation of either too much bone (osteopetrosis) or too little bone (osteoporosis).
What can repair root fractures?
cementum callus
What is a cementicle?
small pieces of cement that could detach from the surface or
activated within the periodontal ligament to form small pieces of cementum in the PL
Where would you find a cementicle?
periodontal ligament
What is shown in the image?
cemeticle (free)
Are cementicles important?
yes
they could effect the attachment of periodontal ligament to the cementum
If they are close to the sulcus they could effect treatment as well
apical and middle thirds
furcation areas
Does the cementum form throughout life?
YES
What structure provides a barrier between the bone and cementum?
PL
What is hyper cementosis?
increased thickness of the cementum
cementum becomes attached to the bine (noPL in the middle)
What are the signs of hypercementosis?
Periapical inflammation
What is ankylosis?
stiffness of a joint as the result of injury or disease
e.g. cementosis, fusion of the cmentum to the alveolar bone
What is the clinical implication of hypercementosis?
excessive deposition of cementum on the tooth roots
hard to extract tooth
What does this image show?
hypercementosis
fusion of the cementum to the bone
need to take x-ray before
